The Rice Memorial Intergenerational Daycare is connecting youth and older adults on a weekly basis with activities like gardening, singing or exercising. While interacting with the residents of the Rice Care Center, the hope is that the daycare children gain understanding and develop a comfort level around older adults – not displaying discomfort around wheelchairs and walkers.
The intergenerational programming is improving the quality of life for all participants. The youth’s presence reduces the feeling of isolation for older adults and increases their range of motion through physical activity. Children are also able to learn history and hear stories from those who lived it. This program is making an impact across generations of life.
